6 times table answers

The 6 times table is 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72.

  • 6 × 1 = 6
  • 6 × 2 = 12
  • 6 × 3 = 18
  • 6 × 4 = 24
  • 6 × 5 = 30
  • 6 × 6 = 36
  • 6 × 7 = 42
  • 6 × 8 = 48
  • 6 × 9 = 54
  • 6 × 10 = 60
  • 6 × 11 = 66
  • 6 × 12 = 72

The 6s are where times tables start to feel hard for a lot of kids. The numbers get bigger and the easy "ends in" rules of the 2s, 5s and 10s are gone. The good news is that the 6s are tightly connected to tables your child probably already knows: the 3s and the 5s. Use those connections and the 6s shrink to just a few new facts. One of them, 6 × 8, is among the most commonly mixed-up facts in the whole chart, so it deserves extra attention.

Tricks for the 6 times table

1Five groups and one more

Six of something is five of it plus one more. 6 × 7 is 5 × 7 (35) plus 7, which makes 42. 6 × 8 is 40 plus 8, which makes 48. Since the 5s are easy, this gets your child to the answer reliably without guessing.

2Even numbers times 6 end in the same digit

When you multiply 6 by 2, 4, 6 or 8, the answer ends in the same digit you started with: 6 × 2 = 12, 6 × 4 = 24, 6 × 6 = 36, 6 × 8 = 48. Even better, the tens digit is half of that number: half of 4 is 2, so 24; half of 8 is 4, so 48. This works for 2, 4, 6 and 8, which covers several of the hardest 6s facts.

3Double the 3s

Every 6s answer is a 3s answer doubled. If your child knows 3 × 7 = 21, then 6 × 7 is double 21: 42. This is a good strategy for children who are confident with the 3s and with doubling.

4Shrink the list

Your child already knows 6 × 1, 6 × 2, 6 × 5 and 6 × 10, and 6 × 3, 6 × 4 come from flipping facts they know (3 × 6, 4 × 6). The real new work is 6 × 6, 6 × 7, 6 × 8, 6 × 9 and 6 × 12.

Patterns to spot

  • All answers are even.
  • The last digits repeat 6, 2, 8, 4, 0: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60.
  • The digit sums cycle 6, 3, 9: 6, 1+2=3, 1+8=9, 2+4=6…
  • The 6s are double the 3s and half the 12s.

Common mistakes

  • 6 × 8 answered as 46 or 42. Use the "same last digit" rule: 6 × 8 ends in 8, and half of 8 is 4, so 48.
  • 6 × 7 answered as 48 (that is 6 × 8) or 36. Five sevens plus one seven is 35 + 7 = 42.
  • 6 × 9 answered as 56 (that is 7 × 8). The 9s check helps: the digits of 54 add to 9, the digits of 56 do not.
  • 6 × 12 answered as 62 or 66. Split it: 6 × 10 + 6 × 2 = 60 + 12 = 72.

How to practice at home

  • Spend most practice time on 6 × 6, 6 × 7, 6 × 8 and 6 × 9. The easy facts need much less repetition.
  • Ask your child to explain how they got an answer. A strategy they can say out loud tends to stick better than a memorized number.
  • Practice the 6s alongside the 3s for a few days so the doubling link becomes automatic.
  • If 6 × 8 and 7 × 8 keep getting swapped, put them side by side: 48 and 56.

6 times table FAQ

What is the 6 times table?

6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72: the answers to 6 × 1 through 6 × 12.

What is the trick for the 6 times table?

When you multiply 6 by an even number (2, 4, 6, 8), the answer ends in that same digit, and the tens digit is half of it. So 6 × 8 = 48. For other facts, use 5 groups plus one more.

What is 6 × 8?

6 × 8 = 48. A common mistake is 46 or 42. Five eights is 40, plus one more 8 is 48.

What is 6 × 7?

6 × 7 = 42. Five sevens is 35, plus one more 7 is 42.

Why is the 6 times table hard?

The answers are larger and do not follow a simple ending rule. Several 6s facts (6 × 7, 6 × 8, 6 × 9) also sit close to facts from the 7s and 8s, which makes them easy to swap.

Should my child learn the 3s before the 6s?

It is a good idea. Every 6s answer is a 3s answer doubled, so knowing the 3s gives a reliable way to work out the 6s.
