Spelling Worksheet Generator (Free, Printable)

This spelling worksheet generator turns any word list into printable practice sheets. Type up to 30 of your own words, or pick one of our 24 ready-made lists, then choose a sheet: trace and write, missing letters, word search, look-say-cover-write-check, flash cards or a numbered test paper. The PDF is made on your device in US Letter size, and nothing is uploaded.

Making a spelling worksheet from your own list

Choose "My own words" and type or paste the list from school, one word per line or separated by commas. Numbering and duplicate words are removed automatically, so you can paste a list exactly as it came home. Up to 30 words fit.

Pick a sheet type and press print. The PDF is built in the browser, so it works without an account and your list never leaves the device. On a long list, the word search uses the words that fit the grid.

Which spelling sheet to use on which day

  • Monday, trace and write: your child traces each word, then writes it alone. Good for first meeting a new list.
  • Tuesday, missing letters: each word has gaps to fill. It points attention at the tricky part, such as the vowel or the silent e.
  • Wednesday, word search: a lighter day. Finding words in a grid helps children notice letter order.
  • Thursday, look-say-cover-write-check: the most useful sheet for recall.
  • Friday, test paper: a numbered sheet for the practice test.

The practice pack puts trace, missing letters and a word search into one PDF if you prefer to print once for the week.

Look-say-cover-write-check, step by step

  • Look at the word carefully and notice any tricky letters.
  • Say it out loud, slowly.
  • Cover it by folding the sheet along the line.
  • Write it from memory in the next box.
  • Check by uncovering the word and comparing letter by letter.

If a word is wrong, your child repeats the steps for that word only. Two or three passes a day are enough.

Running a home spelling test with the test paper

Print the numbered test paper with 10 or 20 lines. Say each word, use it in a short sentence, then say it again. Your child writes it on the next line. Mark it together afterwards and circle the misses; those become next week's practice words.

The sheets print well in black and white on ordinary paper. Card stock is only worth it for flash cards you plan to reuse.

Play first, then print the spelling misses

Paper works best after a little play. On our spelling practice page, your child can try the same list with flash cards, build the word, find the word and a typed test, and you can print just the misses. For more ways to play, see our spelling games. In the games, words are read aloud by your device's built-in voice, when it has one; otherwise the word is shown and a grown-up can read it.
