Without and with regrouping
Start without regrouping (23 × 3 = 69), where each digit multiplies on its own. Then move to regrouping, also called carrying (27 × 4 = 108), where the ones produce a number bigger than 9.
Two ways to solve
Standard algorithm: multiply the ones, carry, multiply the tens, add the carry. Box (area) method: split 27 into 20 and 7, multiply each by 4 (80 and 28), then add: 108. The box method shows why the algorithm works, so many children find it easier at first.
Before you start
This skill depends on single-digit facts. If a child stalls on 7 × 4 inside 27 × 4, a few days with the times tables will make these worksheets much smoother. Ready for more? Try 2-digit by 2-digit.
Frequently asked questions
What grade learns 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication?
Usually 4th grade in the US, building on the single-digit facts learned in 3rd grade.
What is regrouping in multiplication?
When a step produces a number of 10 or more, the tens are carried to the next place. In 27 × 4, 7 × 4 = 28: write 8 and carry 2.
Is there an answer key?
Yes, on a separate page of every PDF.
