What blending is, and how build the word trains it

Blending means saying each sound in a word and pushing the sounds together until a word pops out: /c/ /a/ /t/, cat. It is the core skill behind early reading, and it takes lots of short practice.

In build the word, your child gets the letter tiles for the word plus two decoy letters. They tap or type the letters into slots, and a wrong letter bounces back. Many words show a small emoji picture, so your child knows what they are building. Ask them to say each sound as they place it, then read the whole word at the end.

Which CVC game fits which stage

  • Memory match with pictures: for beginners. A word is matched to its picture, so your child reads with a helpful clue. Six pairs, no timer, and the game counts tries.
  • Build the word: once your child knows most letter sounds and can blend with help.
  • Find the word: the word is said or shown, and your child taps it among four look-alike tiles, such as hat, hot, hut and hit. Ten rounds, and misses come back sooner.
  • Flash cards: for speed, once words can be sounded out. The goal is reading the word without saying every sound aloud.

Words are read aloud by your device's built-in voice, when it has one; otherwise the word is shown and a grown-up can read it.

Single-vowel CVC decks before mixed ones

Start with one vowel at a time, usually short a. When the short a deck is easy, try short i or short o, then u and e. Mix vowels only once each single-vowel deck feels comfortable. Mixed decks force your child to look at the middle letter, which is exactly the point, but they are frustrating too early.

For writing the same words, see the short vowel spelling lists. All 130 words are listed on our CVC words page.

CVC snags: b and d, short e and short i

Mixing up b and d is normal at five and six. A quick trick: make a "bed" with both fists, thumbs up. The left hand is b, the right hand is d.

Short e and short i sound close, especially in some accents. Have your child look at your mouth: e is a little more open, i is a small smile. Pairs like pen and pin or bed and bid make good practice.

Blending games with no screen

  • Sound slide: touch your shoulder for the first sound, elbow for the middle, wrist for the last, then slide down the arm to blend.
  • Magnetic letters: build cat on the fridge and read it together.
  • Change one letter: cat becomes hat, then hot, then hop. Your child reads each new word.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do kids start CVC games?

Most children play them between about four and six, once they know a good number of letter sounds. Follow your child rather than the calendar.

Do all CVC words in the games have pictures?

No. Only words that are easy to draw get an emoji picture. Choose the "words with pictures" deck to play memory match with word and picture pairs.

How long should a CVC game session last?

Five to ten minutes is plenty. One round of build the word and one round of find the word is a good session.

Can my child play the CVC games with a keyboard?

Yes. In build the word your child can type letters, in find the word keys 1 to 4 pick a tile, and memory match works with Tab and Enter.

Are there other phonics games on the site?

Yes. The same games work with sight word lists on our sight word games page.
