Multiplication War

How to play with real cards

Remove the jokers. Decide what face cards are worth (a simple option: Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 0, Ace = 1), or take them out to stick to 1-10. Deal the deck evenly. Each round, both players flip two cards and say the product out loud. The bigger product takes all four cards. If the products tie, it is "war": each player puts three cards face down and flips two more. The player with the most cards when time is up wins.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: one player flips one card and multiplies by a fixed number, such as 2 or 5. Harder: flip three cards and multiply all of them, or let the first player to say the correct product win the round.

Why it works

War mixes facts randomly, which is how they show up in real math. Saying products out loud gives quick feedback, and the game is short enough to play a few rounds before dinner. For more practice, try flash cards or other multiplication games.
